Super Sweet

According to the International Food Information Council’s 2010 Food & Health Survey, 70% of Americans are trying to consume less sugar and 63% are trying to consume less high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS), but they still want their food and beverages to be super sweet!

Considering that U.S. consumers rely on sugar and other sweeteners as a source for 17% of their energy (more than twice the global average), they’re seeking alternatives to sugar and NFCS as never before.

Sales of products promoted for their stevia content more than tripled, from $85,552,067 in the year ending in June 2009 to $281,441,495 in the year ending in June 2010 and these Nielson-reported figures take into account only U.S. food stores that have sales in excess of $2 million.

Obviously, stevia’s growth in sales is a reflection of consumer acceptance.  What’s remarkable is that it has been positioned as a sweetener only since 2009 and has, in that short time, become equal in acceptance to aspartame, which has been in the marketplace for 15 years.
